PS3 60GB SD card compatability

I don't like the idea of keeping my backups on an external device and i'm quickly filling up my 1TB HDD so I was thinking of expanding my internal storage via the built in card readers.

For this purpose, does anyone know the max size storage devices they use? max SD card, compact flash or memory stick?

And will it support any modern tech like SDXC?

Thats a good question and one that ive never heard explained. I would assume that it falls under the max 1tb limit the same as the internal hard drive. Unless they use a different set of drivers for the card readers on an a01. Maybe psdevwiki? Im not sure maybe one of the more knowledgable members here can shed some light on this. @kozarovv @sandungas

For SD card is 2GB (joonie told me that someone managed to run 8GB, but my sdhc don't work). For other card types, I don't know. Also for SD card speed is very low, as 2GB cards are not intended to run fast.

Really 2GB only ?. Im asking just incase is a typo, and because is a bit shocking

But well, at that time (before 2007) there was not much bigger SD cards i guess... and microSD limit was around 2GB too iirc

@Horrorcosmic SDXC for sure not. SDHC maybe (look into manual, if yes, in theory should see cards up to 32GB). You can connect any type of card to PS3 via reader on USB but of course this doesn't make any sense and You asking about build in SD port.

I have a CECHA-01 FAT PS3 running Rebug 4.81.2 REX with a 1TB internal HDD. I am using a 16GB SDHC SDCard with no problems. I use it for videos, music, photos etc. I use external HDDs for games and game data. Hope this helps.

Also I am using an 8GB Compact Flash and an 8GB Memory Stick ProDuo.

Im wondering if backup managers has some code to load backups from that card readers from PS3 model CECHA

I dont even know if are supported in the filemanagers... but i never had a CECHA to see if the device icons shows
Btw @Zar this could be another addition to managunz filemanager, the support for:
dev_cf
dev_sd
dev_ms

SDHC (High Capacity) standard was created in 2006. Too late for $ony.

Also SD slot can't be updated to support SDHC in software way. About cards bigger than 2GB, is possible until is still SD standard card (something like 64gb SDHC).

in mgz, it's scan only dev_usbxxx / ntfsx: / dev_hdd0. But in filemanager I think these devices are mounted automatically like dev_usb, so they should be displayed in filemanager.

well, I believe the wii was updated to support sdhc with firmware 4.1, so sony may have added updates. however, I doubt that they did. if it's hardware-based, then software is limiting it just like with the hdd.

as for memory sticks, they have a maximum capacity of 1-2TB iirc, but no stick was ever that large. the largest I know of is 32GBs, so I bet the memory card reader has a larger capacity than the sd card one considering the psp can use at the bare minimum 32GB (maximum).

My SDCard, Compact Flash and Memory Stick ProDuo show in multiMAN 4.81.02, IRISMAN 4.81.1 and Managunz 1.28.
You can see the devices as icons in the filemanagers inside that backup managers... and also you can see the backup in the "game selection" screens incase you copy a game backup to any of that cards ?
Did you try also to mount a game backup from them ?

At this point after you and zar wrote your messages i guess the answer is "yes", but just for curiosity sake

I use a 2TB external HDD NTSF for PS3 backups and a 1TB external HDD FAT32 for PSOne and PSP backups and for PS3 game data. My 1TB internal is used for PS2 backups. My SDCard is nearly full of videos and music. I think the smallest PS3 game I have is Dragon's Crown which is around 3GB iirc. Let me move some stuff around and test if I can launch and play games from these cards. I may not know until tomorrow as I am about to go to work. I'll keep you posted on the progress and outcome.

You can use this tool to convert small PSN games to ISO
I guess it should work too with PS3 hombrew apps (such, dunno retroarch), this way you can make a very small ISO for tests

I was specially interested in what managunz does with this card devices, but you said you can see the icons in filemanager (so in managunz filemanager are working), and zar said is not scanning for that devices to search for backups (so for the game selection screen in managunz is not going to work)

With the others i guess multiman is going to work in both modes (filemanager, and game backup screen)... and with iris/irisman im not so sure

It would be great if the SD card slot was properly usable, imagine adding 400GB of space without opening console or adding any cables/hardware. I suppose a small microSD card reader can always be added to a USB 2.0 port, if you have the card reader it means you have 4 USBs so its not such a big deal to lose one.

The readers are so small now you would not even notice they are plugged in, and they can be got for less than $5, read speed is a different problem, but the standard reader is not particularly fast either so it might work out the same or better.

Good idea, with microSD + tiny adapter

The other day was presented a new microSD with 500gb capacity, the previous record was in 400gb as you mentioned, but are expensive, and for a PS3 there is no need to have all the capacity in the same microSD
Instead of buying a microSD of 400GB is better to buy 4 of 100GB each... is going to be cheaper and it helps to prevent disasters (followig the rule of not placing all the eggs in the same bucket)

I tested Dragon's Crown (about 1.5GB) using PS3ISO folder on my Compact Flash, SDCard and Memory Stick ProDuo. First ManaGunz, it doesn't show in games list and cannot be launched from file manager. IrisMan, doesn't show in games list but launches and plays with no issues from file manager (all cards). multiMAN, doesn't show in games list but launches and plays with no issues from file manager (all cards).

Also, I tested a 64GB SDXC MicroSDCard and it was recognized by multiMAN, IrisMan and ManaGunz. This is the largest card I have on hand.

Thanks for the tests
Did you notice if the reading speeds was aceptable ?... game running normally without lag, etc...

True, 400Gb are expensive, the 200GB are reasonable value ish https://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-microSDXC-Memory-Adapter-Performance/dp/B073JY5T7T/, about 30% of the cost of the 400GB , I have a couple of those but they are dedicated to devices now, (switch and a tablet), I will try do some tests on my old phat and slim with card reader when I get a chance.

Nice one, with cards getting so big now I think managers could add full support for all formats and folders.
