PS3HEN PS3HEN - F.A.Q.

Is it possible to install Linux onto a ps3 using HEN at the moment?
No, because is required to install a CFW with the hdd "partition tables" modifyed

Inside the internal PS3 hdd there are 3 notables partitions (or regions)
VFLASH (256MB)
dev_hdd1 (2GB, Cache partition)
dev_hdd0 (the rest of the hdd, GameOS partition)

To install OtherOS++ (the unnoficial one) what we do is to resize the VFLASH up to several GB (to create a new partition for linux inside VFLASH)

Hey if you already have HEN installed is it safe to put a CFW like Rebug Cobra onto the machine or should I backtrack to 4.87 (or whatever the latest update would be)

jb my PS3 superslim a few months ago, HFW 4.91.1, PS3HEN 3.3.0, webMAN MOD 1.47.46h, mmCM 4.91
Mainly I use the PS3 port of ScummVM for playing classic adventure games.

Recently tried out some really old apps from the PS3 Homebrew Store (store.brewology.com), but only got various error messages:
Snes9x PS3 V44.06 (error code: 80010007)
Heretic V1.0 (error code: 80010009)
Hexen V1.0 (error code: 80010009)

Have not yet found a solution. there is a video on yt: he starts the app and gets an error message. upon activation of HEN the app is working. Does not work for me obviously. Below another yt video (PS3 jb tutorial) I read that some apps might only work with CFW.

Is there any chance to get those old homebrew apps working on PS3HEN?

99% of homebrew that runs on CFW will run on PS3HEN.
CCAPI is one of the few that is a CFW only app, there could be another or two but generally most homebrew works.

Those listed should run on PS3HEN, they are older homebrew's so they likely need a resign for 3.55.

Heretic and Haxen also may need some additional files from the original game but not sure.
I know all 3 are early PS3 homebrew's from 3.41 era.

Thanks for your quick response. So I searched for hints on resigning packages for PS3.
I tried what I found here on this forum [need-help-with-ps3xploit-resigner.26283]
And I also followed what is shown in another forum (sorry, for technical reasons I cannot post the direct links here).

I reguarly access my PS3 with FileZilla so copying over the file act.dat was no problem. Then I installed and started PSNPatch on PS3.
Since my real IDPS was displayed as 32 times 00 I created a respective file idps.hex

Well, I tried out 4 different apps after resigning process and none worked.
Regarding Heretic and Hexen: I had the respective .WAD files copied hence to the author's instructions, i. e. in the games' subfolders called USRDIR
Those two and Snes 9x still give the same error messages. I also tried out Haxed Alienbreed which did not work.

Hence to the filename Haxed Alienbreed was for FW 3.55. I decided to install RCPS3 with OFW 3.55 on my notebook.
It does not have enough power for a good PS3 emulation gaming experience, but just for testing purposes. Well, it works.
The intro with the bouncing RAZOR logo starts up quickly - even though I did not even chose a HFW or CFW.

Is there any better way or software for resigning?

Unfortunately I have not been successful. I (and most surely others too) would be grateful for a comprehensible explanation which allows me to reproduce all necessary steps. Well, as I mentioned in my first posting I jb my PS3 just some months ago and my respective knowledge is limited.
Since I am currently quite flexible regarding my time schedule I would be willing to resign all the old stuff on brewology.com and make it available, i. e. uploading it and sending the respective link(s) to someone who is involved in the administration of that website. Since there are regularly new additions and updates there must be someone in charge.

Try these from bucanero.
https://github.com/bucanero/heretic-hexen-ps3/releases

Aldostools does most of the heavy lifting there in regards to maintaining PS3 over at brewology, but i do also have access to make updates as well if needed. Looks like we need to add bucenaro's updated builds there @ brewology and here in our resource section

Edit: Added @bucanero builds to brewology

For SNES your best bet is going to be RetroArch, there are several SNES emulators within RetroArch.

First of all many thanks for your extensive reply. :cheerful:

In the meantime I tried out both Hexen and Heretic from bucanero twice each, both with and without .WAD files in the right place.
Right upon start I got a black screen with text in the first line saying
"Initializing SPUs...00000000".
But then there is no more progress. My PS3 freezes (even PS button would not let me close the program) and has to be reset.

I have FBNeo RL Plus installed which also supports SNES gaming. An alternative outside of RetroArch would be nice.

For your information:
During weekend I installed "Super Mario Boom!!! v1.0" released Sept 23, 2024 from store.brewology.com and it works like a charm.
And I updated the PS3 port of ScummVM to the latest daily build and it works fine too.
Just wanted to let you guys know so that you can see my PS3HEN installation is not broken.
