PS3 Update: Sony backtracks and announces PS3 and Vita Stores to remain open!

even if the store goes down, updates and stuff you've bought will probably still work. it's not closed like it is with the 360, so stuff can be downloaded on the pc as well. a jtag/rgh 360 uses unity to download updates iirc, but it can't download what it doesn't have. it has most stuff, so if there comes a time when updates can't be downloaded, there will probably be an alternative, at least for those with cfw and hen.

something like this as third party support: http://xboxunity.net/

look up cod: black ops II (155 updates, all regions)

btw, there's a patch in the hacked dash to download directly from unity, so I see something like that for the ps3, a hen or cfw patch so that you don't have to download directly from some third party on the pc.

Thanks for all the replies to my questions. I will get the updates to my PC firstly. As you all have pointed out, it will be much easier with hacked PS3. Haven't had one in a long time, so about time to get back into that world. I haven't even done a system update without checking if new firmware is hackable for years for that same reason anyways. Just haven't gotten around to it yet. Obviously much easier done nowadays as well :D

Ironically, I just found this article right now speculating that we might just be paranoid. Or that sony might be forcing obsolescence for their new plan????

Well, the fact that Sony hasn't made an official statement yet hopefully is a sign that it's all fake and/or speculative rumours.
I wouldn't bet a lot on them going for adding full backward compatibility for PS5 or future consoles ever. But it would be great. And it would be a good choice for them to keep the option to download some old games from store/emulation/some BC etc. available. It's what the people seems to be wanting.

Well, since PS is under CEO Jim Ryan, so it's not impossible for them to shut down PS store for legacy consoles. He only just wants every single player to enjoy brand new PS5 console instead.

Then, instead of complaining and crying over "rumor", better make a homebrew functionality on HEN or CFW to allow console activation without PSN and also easier PSN content installation with dummy act.dat file instead of going over with ReactPSN.

Isn't it interesting to decompile the PS Store to see how it works and how it retrieves data, when it still works? so if it really goes down, we can repurpose it to other things

Someone can do it if they want to, but it wont be me. If you mean like a homebrew store, it will probably be easier to use an app like PKGi.

It's now confirmed this story is real and the dates are correct. Thanks to @DADi590 for letting us know on discord.

Does someone want to get cool stuff in the stores, like homebrew stuff, CFWs, or revived games installers, for example? :D Would be very cool to see the stores having some cool job after being closed! Also seeing the PSP one again working normally would be awesome (in Portugal it's empty since years ago).

I had better buy the costumes for graces f soon. I still don't have the game. I plan to get xillia and symphonia as well. I don't know how much dlc each game has though, but I'll buy that too. no switch games I can think of for April, so it might be the perfect month to get that stuff.

Still some information that seems to be missing even in Sony's official statement. It doesn't say anything about game updates. But from what I've gathered so far it seems as those will be fine even still. However would be nice to have seen it from Sony as well.
Same with the whole PSN thing. Would be good to know if you can still at least login into account on a PS3. In case you might buy one that you need to activate or whatever. Maybe I missed something?

I'm not really ok with Sony's attorney-style press release. What does that even mean? Questions I still have

- Can things be redownloaded if it was purchased already?
- Will game updates still be available?
- Is activation still possible at a later date?

I think those are the three most important questions we want to know.

Somehow I have gotten a few more PS3 consoles for cheap/free. I'm replacing the battery in all of them right now. I'm putting in button cell holders since I don't want to use Chinese replacements, or solder to a lithium-ion battery. However, this makes me wonder....

I remember seeing this episode of Sinfield along time ago where they bought an arcade system. The battery was dying and they needed to swap the battery to save the high score. I'm wondering if there is a way to wire the board with 2 button cell holders. Then every 5 years or so swap the battery with 2 batteries temporarily connected to be able to discard the old battery with no disruption?

the answer to your first question is yes, things can be redownloaded. sony hasn't mentioned anything about the other two, but updates will most likely be downloadable.

Hm this is weird. I would think Sony would want to remove the terabytes of data for updates, content, and bandwidth to repurpose the server completely. I don't see what they are gaining from just shutting down the storefront. I would think the behind the scenes cost would be higher.

most likely sony would be sued if they made it to where games you bought were no longer downloadable. the wii store was shut down in 2019, and games are still downloadable.

I have been thinking about this a bit due to everyone freaking out, it should be possible to have 2 batteries wired in parallel (not in series!) so it lasts twice as long, this would also allow you to swap one battery while the other is still attached, but really things like this will be spoofable in 10 years IMO.

Maybe it will take a DNS redirect to a different time server or whatever. But I really do not see it being an issue in 10 years when PS4 batteries are dying. Worst case you could just get a technician to swap the battery with the mains power still attached if required.

My opinion is swap the battery and worry about it again in 10+ years if the console is still alive, My original fat from 2006 is still fine, I have only seen 1 ps3 ever that needed a battery change.

It's not about the costs of running a server.

And they might take it down fully someday, but that will not be the first step.

Sony sent me this mail for this day. This mail is Turkish but it describes about this sicuation. I will tell you briefly.

- They are closing the PlayStation™ Store on PlayStation® 3 on July 2, 2021, and PlayStation®Vita devices on August 27, 2021.

- We can no longer purchase PS3, PS Vita and PSP digital content, including games and video content, and you will not be able to make in-game purchases through games on PS3, PS Vita and PSP.

- We will still be able to download any PS3, PS Vita and PSP content you own, including games and video content.

Although the contents are still unavailable, it would be great if they can be downloaded. It is a very good improvement, especially when it comes to updates and DLCs. This e-mail probably came to you too. If you want to examine in more detail in your own language, I recommend you to check your e-mail box.
