Why isnt there more XMB mods!

If it works on new firmware, (which I doubt at this stage) Im not sure how to get the USB firmware loader working, I have a copy of dev_flash on my USB stick, I select the option in CFW Settings, I get the message "Level2 Kernal poked" but no other change, I do a soft reboot, no change. So Im not sure of the correct procedure. I expected an automatic reboot with the dev_usb mounted as dev_flash.

I don't think the xai_plugin is fw dependent otherwise it would have been updated 2 or 3 times already but it's still v0.1...
R u sure the flash files on usb are setup correctly?
Also make sure you use /dev_usb000 just in case...

Well im not sure the files are set up correctly as I have no info to go off. But I would expect a black screen or some kind of error if it was working and not finding the files. I just have the contents of dev_flash on the root of dev_usb000.

Are you using the xai_plugin included in Rebug?
Have you tried the original version?

I thought there was only v0.1 and there is no source available so I don't think there are different versions. But I will try them all just incase.

I don't know if Joonie used the xai_plugin as it was released or if mysis gave Rebug another version, still 0.1 but maybe with disabled features? Difficult to tell... You could compare the sizes...

  • Jailcrab code for writing Lv2Kernel redirecting /dev_flash/ access to a mounted /dev_usb/
Maybe is working? Try to change files on dev_flash when activated. And maybe you will change files on usb that way?

yeah they are all the same size exactly, cant see any difference in function either. What makes me think it would be firmware dependant is that it says "lv2 kernel poked" , if it is poking the kernel doesn't it need to know the offsets..and they will change slightly over different FWs.

I can tell Its not working, as I have a modified XMB and Im trying to mount a standard rebug dump of dev_flash.

I know it also says "should not be fw dependant, tested on 4.46 and 4.7x and does not use hardcoded offset patches"

Anyway it doesn't matter too much, I was just curious about the feature.

If I have to guess, I would say this...
Lv2 would be poked if it works like jaicrab's tool, because all references to /dev_flash are changed into /dev_usb000...
It does not need to be fw dependent, just scan Lv2 & replace the string occurrences. No need for offsets..

ok, so not hardcoded, so it finds the offsets when it scans? anyway its not finding them now or not working for some other reason.

I am not sure. I remember that jaicrab's tool dumps Lv2 then scans it & patches Lv2 in memory. I cannot remember how it deals with offsets, I know some are hard-coded but which ones...?
Also mysis code could be different...

Maybe you should try using: /remap.ps3?src=/dev_flash&to=/dev_usb000/my_flash ;)

EDIT:
If what you want to do is to try a different lv2_kernel, use /copy.ps3/dev_usb000/lv2_kernel.self

wMM will copy the self to /dev_flash/sys/lv2_self, poke the path in LV1 and do a soft reboot (load LPAR id 1).
The changes are restored after a hard reboot. Delete lv2_self from /dev_flash/sys if you plan to use a different file.

*The full edtion of wMM is required for these functions*

That's cool, means people cant use the excuse that trying mods or trying to make mods is risky any more. :)

No, it's not risky anymore. At most only a hard reboot or hold down the power button for 15 seconds until the beep sounds would be needed.

With all these new sprx files flying around lately I wonder would anyone be interested in something like this? I put together this POC quickly:

It works very simply, Just create your boot_plugins.txt files any way you want, and then put them into the folders (1 in each folder), then you can simply switch between the txt files from the XMB, It auto-reboots after you have picked, it also shows a tick (thanks @Berion for the icons) next to the enabled option, if you want you can edit the xml file so it shows the plugin names on the XMB like I have done.

It relies on wMM web commands (thanks @aldostools) for its file manipulation, so wMM must be running for it to work..

*not released yet, just an idea. It is working though.

Really good work
It 's something i'm thinking also. It appear me like a "must have"
Maybe you could add PIC1.PNG or PIC0.PNG in background for each boot_plugin.txt with listed plugins
Is it thinkable to add webMAN toogle an Cobra toogle ? It gives me sens

When i think in xmb mods im not thinking in just adding options to xmb but a new completly diferent visual, i think i have talked about this sometime ago, wish there was something on PS3 just like CXMB for PSP that as awesome themes that completly change the look of the xmb, icons position, icons size, fonts, gameboots, etc etc etc without messing with flash, imo that would be one of the biggest releases as of now if it would ever be done.
