    Savegames conversion tutorial

WARNING: This option will overwrite your current savedata in dev_usbXXX, use it with caution

    • Download someone else's savegame for your game of your choice
    • Put the savedata in your pendrive in "X:\PS3\SAVEDATA" (pendrive must be in FAT32)
    • Put in the pendrive in the PS3
    • Select Network Tab > [★ Custom Firmware Tools] > PSN Tools > Convert Savedata
    • Wait until the conversion finishes
    • Once finished, copy your converted savedata throught XMB "Saved Data Utility (PS3)"
    • Launch your game and load your new savedata

    Creation of act.dat tutorial

WARNING: The accountID is linked to savedata and trophies, so, if your current user already have a valid accountID and you overwrite it, you will be unable to use your trophies and savedata on that account until you restore the original accountID in xRegistry.sys.

I recommend to use an empty account without trophies and savedata or an account without accountID.

To create a fake act.dat, Cobra 8.3 must be enabled, and your PS3 must have at least one account with a valid accountID and launch a game that requires a RIF/RAP license file.

Cobra will search a valid accountID in all existing accounts and create act.dat while the game is launched through the XMB. If no accountID is found, act.dat will not be created.

You can create a fake accountID (like reactPSN), to do this go to Network > ★ Custom Firmware Tools > PSN Tools and choose between "Create accountID" or "Overwrite accountID" (Be careful about the last option because if you already have a fake/real accountID it will be overwritten). It is recommended to use these options in an account that does not have an ID. The PS3 will restart if everything went well.

The tutorial would be the following:
    • Download your purchased PSN game from PS Store
    • Put game RAP file in "X:\exdata" or "/dev_hdd0/exdata"
    • Launch your purchased PSN game
    • Cobra will check if any of your PS3 accounts have accountID
    • Faked act.dat will be created while the game is launching

If none of your accounts have a valid accountID you will need to create it. To do this log into the local PS3 account where you want to create the accountID. You can see if your current local account has an accountID choosing Network Tab > [★ Custom Firmware Tools] > PSN Tools > Show accountID.

To create a faked act.dat do the following:
    • Make sure Cobra 8.3 is enabled
    • Select Network Tab > [★ Custom Firmware Tools] > PSN Tools > Create accountID
    • Select Network Tab > [★ Custom Firmware Tools] > PSN Tools > Activate account
    • Launch your purchased PSN game
    • Faked act.dat will be created while the game is launching

Now you have a faked act.dat and your local account is activated. The act.dat file works for every local account, you only need one file for all accounts.

    Block PSN log in

This method is developed by @DeViL303, it will only work with Cobra enabled, Cobra will block log in on PSN/SEN while the CFW syscalls are enabled, to enable it again you need to disable CFW syscalls completely (you can do it with webMAN MOD, psnpatch, SEN Enabler, etc…).

If you want to disable this feature, simply delete /dev_flash/vsh/resource/npsignin_plugin.lck

Anyone know if Evilnat is taking a break or has moved on from the PS3 scene?
Nobody seems to know but if I recall correctly, between releases, Nat has taken extended time off from this scene before, he might just reappear when we least expect him to ;-).

The scene should not count on anybody in particular to sort shit out, devs work on releases at their own leisure & in their own time, they are not bound to anything or anyone.
After an extensive beta testing phase, Nat released on github the final source code of all the changes he made to Cobra & xai_plugin, at the end of the day, any dev could fix issues found in his last CFW so like I said before, what we really need is new devs interested in taking things further rather than always count on the same handful of contributors to do everything for everyone else ad vitam æternam.

That's unlikely to happen but what for anyway? What exactly would you expect this "comeback" to bring us?

There are no DEX PUPs available anymore so unless someone new comes forward with DEX PUPs, updated Rebug REX releases cannot be made whether that team decides to make a come back or not.

Imho it's not Team Rebug that this scene needs most at this point, it is more devs & contributors, new blood..
It will be really hard to secure DEX pups since most studios have decommissioned their PS3 equipment. I had a guy that had access to devnet but he refused to give me the DEX pup out of fear for losing his job

Maybe it's because I'm currently using a CRT screen since my LED is busted but, I haven't been able to run any PS2 backups under this CFW on my CECHL01.
I have tried both running official PS2 Classics .pkgs that I installed from PKGI as well as several ISO files that I transferred via FTP.
I get a black screen when trying to launch them and my TV doesn't seem to receive a signal, furthermore my controller is also disconnected and unable to connect back, forcing me to forcibly shutdown by holding the power button.
I figure that I must be doing something wrong or it must be the custom firmware's fault since the PS3 is in an overall solid condition.

That's basically what the story has been ever since 4.81 or 4.82.
Nobody is willing to help us anymore with that stuff while the pool of people who might be able to help us in the first place is getting extremely small.

the ps3 will reboot in order to enter into ps2 mode. controller disconnects, tv gets no signal, all those things can happen. maybe you are not giving it enough time.

otherwise, i would try a different ps2 classics placeholder or backup manager.

you can always try reinstalling the cfw pup file too

I'll try reinstalling the CFW PUP file, just checked with webman mod and had the same results.

@bguerville

I do not use DEX. And I am sure there are others who do not.

What would a comeback bring? Stability maybe.
I have not tried EN but the issues I see from others are enough to keep me on Rebug.

I am not against the EN CFW by the way.

Also, the PS3 is to me the most unstable (software wise) console I have ever used.
From random crashes to booting back to XMB and trophies getting corrupted and then having to manually delete them for some games and then delete the saves and after that I have to let it rebuild the database just to run certain games or trophies may not register correctly.

Skyrim is the biggest offender I have when it comes to trophy corruption.

I know the machine is overly complex, and the blame for that lies mostly on SCEA.
SCEI should not let them have so much creative control over it.

I also have homebrew capable consoles such as a Dreamcast,PS1, PS2, GC, and a Wii and they never give me so much trouble as the PS3 does.
Even when my OFW slim PS3 worked (for about three months) I had Driver SF on it and once I turned it off during a cut-scene and then every time I tried to play it it would freeze. I had to delete the save and start over just to try and see how far I could get. Not even deleting (if it had that is) Game Data on the HDD would fix it.

It took me a long time to acquire a PS3 because of how expensive it was and I had to get a 360 instead. For a long time I regretted having to choose the Xbox because I preferred a PS or Nintendo console then. Now though I don't regret it since I know how the PS3 actually is.

Both my 360 and PS3 are about the same age (late 2008) and overall the 360 is more stable not to mention you can fully install most games without needing it to be modded (it's not).
I have also never had any issue with the achievements feature on my 360.

Some people claimed the 360 was hacked within six months of its release but in truth the only thing that was hacked was the DVD drive FW to run DVD-R's. The difference here is that the 360 literally requires an RGH modchip while the PS3 does not. So overall I would say the 360 is more secure on the console side.

I also need not mention the list of things Sony revoked from the PS3 or their war on people who modded them back then. I may not have had a PS3 back around when these things started (2010-2011 I think) but I kept up with the happenings of it because I eventually wanted a PS3.

I am not attacking the PS platform by the way, as I really love the first two consoles and I do like the PS3 even with its issues.

I have a lot of respect for you and the homebrew developers who take the time and patience to work with such a complex machine.

No problem, you are entitled to your opinion, I am not arguing with you, only participating in the convo, nothing more.

The point is that Rebug releases were originally REX & D-REX only, that was the whole point of Team Rebug, many other contributors already took care of CEX CFWs. Before the team retired, Joonie put together a few Lite releases for CEX but he only did it because there was no longer a wide range of CEX CFW updates like there used to be.
In the end Team Rebug retired just like every other CFW makers out there in the past 2 or 3 years. No new contributors to replace them, nobody proposing new things.
So here we are & in a way people should feel lucky that Evilnat even produced a 4.88 CFW with so many new features.
One may wonder if anyone will bother making a proper 4.89 CFW at all when it comes down to it..

Regarding the PS3, the architecture can appear complex but quite frankly I think it was a very innovative & wonderful architecture for that time, unlike the pathetic & cheap architecture used in ps4 which to me is nothing more than a glorified pc. Of course ps3 game development took a while to really leverage the console capabilities, but that's the price to pay when you innovate, people have to catch on. In the end the PS3 architecture allowed game devs to produce some ground breaking games, just like the PS2 did in its time, I am afraid I cannot say the same thing of the ps4.

I have to disagree with you on one point though, the PS3 is not as unstable as you make it out to be, consoles on OFW work very well imho, crashes are extremely rare, we know that from the console stats gotten on OFW, afaik always under 1 crash for 100 boots, the problems you may experience are usually either patch based or custom code based.
As to the Xbox, the architecture was extremely similar, s#ny & MS emphasised security on different aspects of the system but both of them made mistakes that led to jailbreak. If s#ny had not messed up their ecdsa encryption implementation leading to private keys dumping, the story would have been way different for the ps3 homebrew scene.

I would say that it seems he has...either a break or has moved on from the scene altogether. I was sending him messages when he was active and he always responded quickly...now it's crickets.

Agreed that nobody should expect anything from any one dev or groups of devs...

the scene has changed dramatically from when I joined. I'm pretty sure 4.80 or 4.82 was the current OFW and we had all kinds of things going on. After 4.84 things just started to die down and it really has never been the same. We still have good devs releasing great tools but I wonder for how much longer. I think there will be a revival of sorts after some time...PS2 seems to be going through one so hopefully it will happen to PS3 as well.

Agreed 100000%

On a side note, thanks for sticking around the scene

@bguerville

I didn't know that about Rebug. Thanks for the information.

Also I am very thankful though that I was able to get a model that was CFW-capable instead of HEN or HAN or whatever it is called. Though I am glad it exists for people with newer hardware.

Hi I am new here, can it also work on CECH-2004B?

Yes.

CFW can be installed on all phat models, all slims 20xx, 21xx and certain 25xx.
For 25xx models, it is required to check the min ver using bgtools or this PUP

All super slims, slims 30xx and 25xx models with min ver 3.60 or later only allow HEN.
HEN can be installed on all PS3 models (phats, slims, super slims).

I got 4.88 and I tried to update my ps3 via USB storage but I kept getting error code 80029C55..how do I fix it?

Can someone show me a guide on how to update my ps3 to HFW?..I got 4.88 OFW and when I try to update it via USB storage, it always ends up showing error code 80029C55, which basically means that it failed to copy the HFW update that I want to install

If your console is CECH-2004B, you don't need HFW or HEN. You can install CFW directly from XMB or from recovery menu. You first need to patch the flash memory of your console using bgtoolset (this is done only once)

You have to go to the following URL in the PS3 Internet Browser:
** www.** ** www.ps3xploit.net > D... (NEW URL = http://ps3toolset.com)/bgtoolset/

Follow carefully this guide by @Coro
https://www.psx-place.com/threads/guide-jailbreaking-with-bgtoolset.33461/

After your have patched the flash memory of your console, you can install this CFW.

Once your console has CFW installed, you *NEVER* will need to install OFW again.

Among the first tasks to do in CFW it is recommended that you enable QA flags and backup your idps, psid, act.dat and EID0 Root Keys (ERK). All these files can be dumped from Network > Custom Firmware Tools menu.

I tried it just now but it still shows me the same error. I tried both in XMB and from recovery menu, but instead, it says it does not detect any update from the storage media that I plugged in/.
