Hacking A PS3 by Coro |
USING THIS GUIDE, AND THE SOFTWARE IT COVERS, IS DONE AT YOUR OWN RISK! As always, do not hack anything that you are not willing to risk breaking beyond repair... |
Part 1 - Current Hacks |
| Can my Playstation 3 be hacked? All Playstation 3 models can be hacked. The first is Custom Firmware (CFW). This is the oldest hack. It patches system files permanently and becomes part of the PS3's operating system software. The Second is PS3Xploit's Homebrew ENabler (HEN). It must be enabled by the user everytime they start the PS3.
Why are there two hacks? CFW can be installed ONLY on older models. HEN was made for models that can not install CFW. HEN will work with all PS3's, but you should install CFW if your model supports it. This is because HEN has a limited feature set compared to CFW.
How do I know which hack to use? This depends on which type of PS3 you are hacking. There are three types of PS3: Original, Slim, and Superlim. The original type is nicknamed 'fat' or 'phat'. All original models are CFW-compatable! Early Slims are CFW-compatable. Later Slims must use HEN. CECH - 20xx / 21xx Both models are CFW-compatable. CECH - 25xx This is the only model that needs a closer look. Some can use CFW and some can not use it. Consoles with a minimum version (minver) of 3.56 or lower can install CFW. Consoles with a minver of 3.60 or higher must use HEN.
An offline tool called MinVerChk (Minimum Version Checker) can also be used to find the minver. It is disguised as a firmware update. When you try to install it, the installation will fail and it will tell you the minver. It is available HERE. There is an online tool used to jailbreak PS3's. It can also tell you if your PS3 is compatable or not by checking its minver. It will discussed in the jailbreaking guide that is linked below. If the tool tells you that your PS3 is not CFW-compatable, then you must use HEN. CECH - 3xxx This model must use HEN. Superslims can only use HEN. Some refurbished consoles may no longer be able to install CFW even if they originally could. Of course, these consoles can still use HEN.
You can install HEN offline but you must download some files first. There are many ways to install HEN. You can even run it without installing.
Patching to allow CFW installation can be done offline with some slightly older firmware but the online tool is much safer and easier to use. Hardware flashers can be used to patch for CFW installation and repair PS3's broken by bad patching. They are physical devices that are soldered to the PS3. Neither of these two methods will be covered by this guide. |
Part 2 - Before You Hack |
| What do I need to do before hacking my PS3? Turn off automatic updates! Otherwise, your PS3 may download and install a new firmware update. If this happens on CFW, you would need to wait for a new CFW to be released and for the online jailbreaking tool to be updated also. For HEN, a new HFW and HEN would be needed.
Do anything you need to do on PSN before hacking. This way you can avoid logging in to PSN until you know how to protect your PS3. Download any digital purchases you may want to use before learning to use PSN safely. Also, sync your trophies and saves if you want. You don't have to update your games right now because you do not need to log-in to do that.
I recommend that you make and activate a PSN account if you do not already have one. This is a good idea even if you do not want to play online or use other PSN features. Lots of reasons. For one, you may decide to get a second PS3 later to keep original and play online. If you already have an account on your hacked PS3, you can buy a game on the unhacked PS3 and move it over to the hacked one without having to log-on with the hacked PS3.
Most people who already have one account will also make a second PSN account so they can remove the main account to protect it. If your main account gets banned, you can no longer download the games and other content that you purchased. Also, games from other systems like PS4 or Vita will become unavailable to you if your account had purchases from those systems on it.
If you make a new PSN account, remember to activate it for games under Account Management. When you are done with PSN, log-out...and stay out! Turn off automatic log-in and do not let it remember your password. Another good way to avoid signing-in is to use a second user profile without a PSN account for games that you never want to play online. Of course, you have to use a user profile with a PSN account when you do want to play online.
