PS3 My first delid

My main difficulty is to understand what is temps out of control? How much high? How much the fans are loud? At this moment I have MGS4 installing and CPU is at 69ºC and RSX at 62ºC and FAN 39%.

How much Fan speed is high? - Anything above 50%

How much Temp is too high? - CELL 75c, RSX 70c

How much fans are loud? - That's you personal tolerance to noise. Some people find fan above 40% as too loud. But fan above 50% is definitely audible.

By the way if CELL is overheating, you don't need to do delid straight away. You should try this method.

those temps are normal but the fan speed is a little high if you're not in game. 68 is the suggested goal, so set temp thresholds to that. I don't know about ps2, but I have mine set at 50%. it's not that audible really especially if you have surround sound or are using a headset. do note: the fan won't increase or decrease in speed while in ps2 mode, so it's best to be marginally high percentage-wise.

@miguelfcp

What thermal paste are you using on top of IHS?

This one

Yeah, the tolerance to noise is a personal preference, it depends too at how much far away you seat fromt the PS3, there is some people that seats very close to the PS3 when playing (kind of desktop setup with a PC monitor)

And yeah, you are completly right that fan speeds over 50% are annoying for everyone (this is not a personal preference), sony was very conscious about it, it can be seen in this graphs https://www.psx-place.com/threads/syscon-fan-settings-coordinate-graphs.31188
Note most of the horizontal lines of the graphs (fan speeds) are concentrated in a range lower than 45% fan speed or so, thats because they considers the fan speeds over 45% or so as the "def con" modes (like alarms, the PS3 is not supposed to work for longer at fan speeds over 45%)
Also, note there are only 3 "def con" fan speeds over 45%

In plain words... sony didnt liked fan speeds over 45% because would cause too much noise annoyances to the consumer (in general... including kids, elders, everyone worldwide)
We are in the same boat than sony in that matter about noise levels... is just in a hacked PS3 we can be more permisive with the noise because our main goal is to prevent the overheatings, but the rule is the same

Yep well done, i use the same tool - cheap as chips from ebay.

Anyone buying one, make sure to buy the 0.1mm thin painter tool

Also have a hot air gun and warm up the rubber, make sliding around the chip easier - and wear gloves.

Alternative cheaper thermal paste - GD900, Snowman thermal paste MTG10 - this is around 14.3w rated and reduces temp by 8c and last longer.

Also i use heatsink glue to bind the plates back again, rather than slopping around.

Successfully delidded my slim 2001A, effectively ending the thermal problems. Used a n° 2 painter's knife to do the job. The thermal paste under the IHS was so dry and hard i had to scrape it off in order to remove it. Applied some arctic silver 5 both under and on top of the IHS and the temps dropped between 25 and 30c.

It sounds crazy, but i use a flat non jaggered dinner knife

https://www.amazon.com/Towle-Royal-Thread-Dinner-Knives/dp/B00CHX420M

And my heatgun - heat up the 4 glue points, then put tape on the edge of the knife and push slightly to end where there is no resistors on the RSX chip, then slowly push down why still keeping the heat gun circling around the rsx chip, the metal plate eventually pops off.

Temp is about 160c on heatgun, works every time.

I've seen several people deliding RSX by prying with a screwdriver or something similar but putting something else between the screwdriver and the substrate, like a sheet of thin metal (like the painter's knife I've used to delid cpu) and it comes off instantly. If I ever have to delid rsx i'Il try to do it that way, tried today with the dead console but my knife is very wide to get too far inside so i stopped

you dont happen to have a link for the painter knife do you?

Old FAT models - CECHC-G models will if working well will be - CELL = 68c and RSX = 55c

If the ps3 fat is on its last legs, CELL = 72c and RSX = 70c

Tweaking the factory syscon fan tables, i've got them running at 30% to 35% fan speed and no more

The trick is having a high low speed setting from its 20% to 30% as it keeps a constant air flow going to reduce build up of heat.

How much Fan speed is high? - Anything above 50%

How much Temp is too high? - CELL 75c, RSX 70c
