I'm using Photoshop to edit.Try this plugin. Option "Clean Transparent" is key here. In GIMP using default PNG plugin it is also possible but this is differently named there. And obviously, image but be 32bit. 24 or 16 will not work, and also 8bit indexed also will not.

The templates i downloaded from here are transparent already, i just place image of cover on bottom layer and resice acordingly.
In Ps i can see transtarancy.
Is there any difference in using GIMP's "clean transparency" and in photoshop saving the png with transparent background?
I don't mind if it has black bars instead of transparent image, as long as i know that's the case its fine. I thought i don't do something wrong on PC part.Ignore the "black bars". That is an issue of the old image controls in the development tool that I used (VB5).
The preview is just to give you an idea of how it will look. It is not a perfect representation of XMB.
The intrinsic image controls in VB5 doesn't support PNG. To show PNG I have to convert the image to raw bitmap.
In the process the transparency is lost, and I replace it with a black color.
In PS3PKG GUI I added support for transparent PNG using an OCX, but I dislike external dependencies.
It seems that the issue was that first time i made a PKG, when i placed the image it was named "ape escape 2.png", but now that i changed the name to "ICON0.PNG" its showing as transparent in XMB.
Im still to test this to be 100% sure if naming is the key factor here in showing a transparent image in XMB!
It seems to work!
