PS2 PS2 doing a lot of noise and TV screen flickering after replacing cables

you can save to real or virtual, your choice. you can even save one game to mc and a diffetent game on vmc file.

you can save two or more to the same vmc i assume...maybe instead of create you can pick a file too. i dont really remember. i set mine up two or three months ago and havent changed any settings since.

FYI you can mount a vmc with wle and copy files to/from real mc. so you dont have to start over to use vmc files.

Why are there so many PS2 game save formats? I've heard about VMC, Codebreaker, Gameshark, X-PORT and Max Drive (and maybe more). What's the "normal" PS2 game save format and is it possible to convert one of the previous to it and change their region?

Also, could you explain me what are Compatibility modes, DMA modes, IGR, PS2RD, CBT and PADEMU?

Codebreaker, Gameshark, X-PORT and Max Drive
those cheat code discs i think. i had one that allowed you to copy saves to usb plugged into ps2. maybe the others let you backup saves too.

IGR is in game reset. if you press a button combo (i dont remember what butons) it will quit the game and return to ps2 menu.

PADEMU lets you use non-ps2 controller with usb but not all controlers work.

others i dont know.

I was able to copy a protected game save thanks to uLaunchELF and I wanted to download two game saves since a third-party 64 Max Memory MC corrupted them many years ago (almost all of my game saves are still there) and I don't want to start these two games from the beginning but I don't know which ones to download (since like I've told there are many formats) and how to successfully load them.

Also, may I copy OPL's configuration from a MC to another? May I have problems if using the MC which had the original OPL configuration or a second one with the configuration on a different slot then when the configuration was created? I always use FMCB's MC on the second slot since I don't know if I can have problems if using it on the other slot.

EDIT: May I have lag if running RetroArch from USB and having the ROMs on it (USB)?

Use cable from router to Ps2, and wifi on PC is fine, as long as the connection is good.
Then setup an SMB share folder on your PC to share games to the Ps2.

My AIO guide does explain how to setup an SMB share under windows. "Part 4 - SMB Shares".

In fact.... Most of what your asking is written down in the guide.

Thanks. I was able to play a game via SMB on OPL but it stutters on the FMVs. Maybe it's because it's over 4.3 GB or because I'm doing this via wifi after connecting my PS2 to the router via an ethernet cable and the laptop to the router via another ethernet cable (I think the latter doesn't matter) instead of the PC to the PS2 via another enter cable? This game also had this problem after I converted it to DVD5 and burned it to a DVD so maybe it's its fault and not mine? I tried the NTSC version and I had a white screen. Also, the black borders (on the PAL version since I couldn't play the NTSC one) are big so can I stretch the screen?

Can I have lag when playing from an external HDD connected to the PC (I want to avoid wasting my PC's HDD)? When moving the PS2SMB folder to the external HDD and from it to the PC's HDD the permissions are reset and when reinstalling Windows 10, connecting the external HDD to another PC (maybe even on the same network) and in other cases I guess I have to set the permissions on the folder again.

Also, on your tutorial I think you made some typos. On the 6th step, you mention "SMB Device Start Mode" when OPL (at least the version I'm using) doesn't have this setting but "ETH Device Start Mode" (maybe ithe setting you mentioned was renamed to this) and on "IP Adress" you mention "129.168.0.2" when I think that what you meant to say was "192.168.0.2". Also, I think you should mention that on the latest Windows 10 versions we should manually enable "SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support" on Windows Features or it won't work (it was disabled by Microsoft on the latest Windows 10 versions) and that if we check the "Turn on password protected sharing" setting on "Advanced sharing settings" we'll have the Error 301 on OPL when trying to log into the SMB server.

Since I'm doing this via wifi do I have to change my PC's ethernet settings at all? It is annoying having to set it everytime I want to play via OPL and afterwards put it back the way it was when not playing as well as having to check the "Turn on password protected sharing" setting on "Advanced sharing settings" everytime I want to play via OPL and afterwards uncheck it when not playing. Also, I can't access some websites on the PC's browsers when doing this unless I use the wifi connection.

Yes, many typos on the guide as I havent quite polished it up just yet, 192 instead of 129 etc...

I think I linked to a seperate guide for direct link between Ps2<->PC using ethernet and enabling SMB v1.
As far as I remember (I'm all about security) password authentication does work. I never disabled the password for my SMB shares.
Im unsure of how USB HDDs work with SMB shares as mine are connected internally via SATA.

You say your laptop is connected to router with ethernet cable? And your ps2 is also connected to the same router with ethernet cable?
If so, then your not using WiFi at all.

Ps2<->PC with ethernet cable just removes the need for a router. The router on the other hand is also a DHCP server (a server that automatically assigns IP addresses to devices when they are connected) and you are removing this functionality by removing it from the network (this is why you need to set IP addresses in Windows manually)

Have you checked your game on the compatibility list? Not all games are known to work with the various media storage methods.
Slow network speeds (your home network, not the Internet) can cause skips, stutters and slowdowns. So, WiFi being slower than ethernet cable, this might be why your game is showing poor performance

I don't have an ethernet cable to connect the PC to the PS2. So, which problems may I have if I do it this way?

Yes, and supposedly it doesn't have problems. But you just said I'm not using wifi at all and like I said I also have this problem after burning the game to a DVD.

I'm a little confused how you have it setup now....

Ps2 to router via ethernet and laptop/PC to router via WiFi?

I'll test another game. Maybe it's because this is a DVD9 game. Which problems may I have with this setup?

You need to enable mode 5 in the compatibility options of OPL for DVD9 games to work.

As for ESR, you need to patch DVD9 with Toxic DL Patcher before burning to a DL DVD disc

I didn't even know about the former. How can I do that? But it reads the game although with stutter on FMVs.

I did the latter and it still stuttered.

So, should I use my wifi IP address? I assume I won't have to manually change its settings but will it work?

If you got it working in the first place, then I doubt that any IP/Wifi/Network settings need changing (unless your using bad ethernet cables)
WiFi, if anything, will make things slower.

Find your game in the list on OPL, tap triangle to bring up the per-game settings, check mode 5 box and save config.

EDIT: Also, what brand of DVD disc are you using? Always use reputable blank media such as Verbatim.
DVD Burners can also be finicky and produce useless media (I'm currently in this boat with my DVD burner and FreeDVDBoot, it burns useless discs, but I am using Verbatim discs)

Verbatim DVD-R.

This is only required for flattened images. I.e. your DVD9 game was stripped and rebuilt into a DVD5 image. This is because such a game would still expect dual layers, but there is only one.

But it read my DVD9 game converted to DVD5 and I didn't need to do that, only patch it with Toxic DL Patcher.

Thank you for the correction :)

I just enabled mode 5 on this flattened image and I still have the same stuttering problem.

Anyway, I got OPL to work via wireless but it was said here it is slower than the previous setup (which I used the laptop's ethernet connection). How slow is it? I still can't connect after turning on password protected sharing, though, so I had to keep it turned off.

After changing the VMODE setting from HDTV 1080i to PAL on OPL's GSM, the black borders are smaller but I still have them so why should I use OPL's GSM to increase the resolution if the image is slimmer, then? It looks like one must choose between supposed (I don't notice a difference regarding the original quality) better quality but slimmer image and supposed worse quality but larger image. Also, after changing the VMODE setting from HDTV 1080i to PAL the audio isn't (at least apparently) out of sync on FMVs like it was on HDTV 1080i but the video still stutters on them (even if the audio is apparently ok). Maybe these two things regarding the resolution only go for this specific resolution or even this specific game (or even games).

I have another question: since I'm running games via an external HDD connected to a laptop, may it go to sleep thus freezing (I assume) the games, and even if one has a way to prevent it, can it degrade the external HDD to the point of it stopping to work? Or maybe it won't even go to sleep because a folder on it is being used (by the PS2)? Also, does running a game from an external HDD make it slower than from a PC?

Have you tried to copy the image to laptop/PC and host it from there instead, this will rule out another variable.

So, GSM is working when you enable it. The big borders either side represent the empty space, EG 480p 4:3 displayed on 720/1080 16:9 as a smaller image.
What you want to do now is use a widescreen cheat in combination with GSM to achieve the best image possible

Yes, before moving it to an external HDD connected to the laptop I had the same problem with it on the laptop's HDD.

This game has built-in widescreen but it gets even worse after enabling it.

Now when running games on OPL I'm having a black screen with some VMODE settings. Maybe I'm still making a mistake. If I want to use this wirelessly, should I use the laptop's ethernet's connection IP address or the wifi one (I'm using the latter)? This is confusing. What's the difference between IPv4 and IPv6 and does only the former work?

How can I use a widescreen cheat and do I have to do it for all the games? Will that make the audio out of sync (or fix it), distort the image or make the game stuttering?
