PS3 RPCS3 (PS3 Emulator) - June 2019 Progress Report - Unlockable Framerates above >30 FPS

Emulating Home Console Game Titles has many Advantages when they work properly. Optimizing the Output Resolution is one thing. But many Game Titles - especially for the PS3 - where designed to run with 30 Frames-per-Second (FPS) only on Original Hardware. Some Games have even a "cap" which doesn't allow the Game to exceed that Frame Limit even if it could or other Games can't even get to the 30 FPS mark due to bad Gaming Design or tremendous of Game Files, which needs to be loaded in the Background and the Console can't even achieve that due to slow Hardware. Best Example, if you ever played the "Bayonetta Series" on your PS3 (I really hope you didn't :) ), then you will know what I mean. But luckily, with the help of the famous PS3 Emulator RPCS3 and it's newest Updates and Recent Changes, this problematic could be lead into a thing to the past for several Game Titles. This will lead many Classic Titles like the "Uncharted Series", "The Last of Us" or "Red Dead Redemption" into a even better Gameplay as you enjoyed them on your original PS3, where those mentioned Game Titles already showed impressive results, as you can check in the video down below.. And the cool thing is, everyone is welcome to contribute their test results here. So you know which Homework I will give you know today, right? :)

  • Progress Report: June 2019

Although June was a slow month for compatibility improvements due to our testers taking a break, it did quietly mark the monumental milestone of the Playable category finally becoming the largest category in our compatibility list! This came to fruition from years of development, testing and re-working to ensure a perfect balance of accuracy and performance to emulate the PlayStation 3. While there is still much to be done, the momentum from these milestones continue to accelerate development. In addition to this, the Intro and Loadable categories decreased due to a few games being moved to Ingame or Playable for the first time. The Ingame category also saw a net decrease due to further maintenance done by merging duplicate game entries. This culminated into our second milestone, where the combined percentage of the Loadable and Nothing categories dropped below 1% for the very first time!

Thanks to Whatcookie's recent patch for NieR Replicant and Gestalt both games are able to break past their previous 30 fps framerate cap!
Since NieR isn't a very intensive game, achieving a locked 60fps with RPCS3 isn't difficult at all.

Man I can't wait to upgrade my PC and give this a go. Thanks @Roxanne for your steady info on updates. You always have good content that tends to be obscure.

NEWS UPDATE: With the huge efforts of the RPCS3 developers, Metal Gear Solid 4 - Guns Of The Patriots is now playable Ingame, the game shows great performance and uncap framerate is possible with the help of a config file, the title is running on the latest Master build.

The Game still has some artifacting and alpha transparency errors, but this is a huge milestone,as is the most requested game of all time and a challenge that RPCS3 Developers were able to surpass.

Has anyone actually tried to get the XMB to work within RPCS3, with that I mean emulating the whole PS3 system as with PCSX2?

Yes, although you'll need the xRegistry.sys from a real PlayStation3 in order to make it work, after that you'll put it on manual mode and launch the XMB Only, but it has been a while since i did that test, so things might have changed.

You can install any firmware you want and boot into the GameOS (XMB), even the older 1.00,but i found 2.80 to be the minimum best for the older XMB.

There are plenty of tutorials explaining how to boot into GameOS with detailed steps, because you'll need to tweak some settings before you boot the Emulator itself.

Some time ago there was special version of RPCS3 to run XMB, it was pinned on their discord. Not sure how it looks now, probably is no longer required to have special build.

Btw. This is RPCS3 running on my PC that is worth now ~150$. :) That emulator is really amazing.

Thats almost the price of a PlayStation3 with some extras thrown in, slowly but surely, the RPCS3 Devs are optimising it in a good manner, perhaps the CELL as we though is over engineered and difficult to program, at the end of the day is not so bad to emulate, this road map shows great progress so far.
