1.) One should either use CFW or HAN and depends on your model of your PS3.
2.) HAN can be ran on any PS3 console, but only make sense to do so on models that can not install a CFW, as CFW can perform each and every task that a HAN can and much more. So it NEVER makes sense to use HAN over CFW when CFW is an option.

3.) Avoiding a ban, there is never a guarantee. There are ways to limit one:
- RESPECT the Network and fellow player's. use your system as an OFW system would online. ,
- Use an app to "disable CFW syscalls"., (PSNpatch / SEN Enabler or webMAN MOD have this feature), this temporary disables your CFW (until next console boot) and theoretically will not trigger various ban flags on PSN (which has proved to be effective in the large front, but there is no gurantees and some reports of bans still)
- Do not run homebrew when connected, Do not run mods, do not cheat, do not use CFW features on PSN.
- Extra Step of security can be done with your disc based games by using a DualBoot firmware (an OFW that allows you to return to a CFW) to play PS3 disc on PSN, and then re-install a CFW when done .
