People who really want backward compatibility with PS2, why don't they buy PS2? I mean, PS2s are sold dirt cheap on ebay and similar places. A lot of these consoles are already modded.
Regarding 360, i would advice buying later models and revisions. Earlier models are just crap as you well know. If you already own a later model, then no need in buying first models (unless you are a collector). By the way, if you are a collector, you should consider Wii earlier models (used ones are sold at throwaway prices) which are also hackable and more durable than 360s.
Even for a collector, it only makes sense to collect things that actually work. I doubt that you can keep old xbox360s in working condition.
There are differences for owing a PlayStation3 BC and a PlayStation2.
Sure, everyone who wants to play PlayStation2 Titles, will advise to get a PlayStation2, since they are dirt cheap, and thats a true statement, but once you own a BC Model, you rarely go back to the original console.
And there is also the advantages over having a Original PlayStation2, although the BC PS3s have a PS2 shoved inside them.
Wireless Controlers, Virtual Memory Cards, Graphical Smoothness, Upscaling to 1080p,and the list goes on....
Specially if you want to connect a PS2 to an HDTV, even with high quality component cables, the image will still look raw, thats because the PS2 wasn't a machine with HDTVs in mind in the 2000s,and at 480/576p the only way to enjoy it is basically if you have a CRT or a PVM.
Backwards Compatible PlayStation3s on the other hand, takes the PlayStation2 480/576p Signals respectively, and upscales them to 1080p,and let me tell you, the results are noticeable, even for untrained eye,its the best way to play PS2 titles on an HDTV.
Then comes the cost, due to these models becoming rarer, nowadays its consider to be a collectors item, which not a lot of people are interested into do the necessary investment and i understand why!
Reliability issues are a big one with this console, some users just want to plug & play, and don't want to bother about health of the console, they don't want to bother about Capacitors, HDDs, YLOD, GLOD, Delid, Thermal Paste Replacement, they just simply want to play, it was fine in 2006,when the console came out, but as the years passed, so the consoles parts get degradation.
Then there its the price, depending on the condition of the console, they can fetch a high price, and from a buyers standpoint, not everyone are willing to drop 250€ for a BC PlayStation3, knowing that there are potential risks involved. Almost all models fetch 200€ or more, but the 20Gb CECHB01,being the most despised version, due to the lack of WIFI/Card Reader, collectors run after them, and due to the scarcely of these units, they fetch a high price, much more than the A01.
But to summarize, if you don't want to bother with any of the topics mentioned upwards, just like you mentioned, you are better off with a PlayStation2.
