PS3HEN Tips to avoid black screens & HEN init failures

I have had a few cases so that when enabling HEN the PS3 got frozen, had to be turned off by long-pressing the power button, and then could not recover from the forced power off, therefore I had to completely reinstall HFW and HEN.

While this is certainly not the end of the world, it is a bit annoying... I wonder if there is any good practice I can follow to minimize the chance of this occurring.

Does cleaning the browser cache still helps? I am not sure because with the most recent HEN I don't see the browser being opened when enabling, but perhaps it's still being used in the background.

Does it matter if I have a disc in the drive? I think I had one there each time my PS3 got frozen while enabling.

Also, every time this problem happened, it was when I had been using the PS3 for a while (i.e. played a few games) before deciding to enabling HEN to do something that required it. Is it better to enable HEN early on after booting up the PS3? If that's the case, I will try to remember to always reboot the PS3 before enabling HEN, just in case.

Thanks!

Another issue with HEN is if a disc is left in the drive. Simply remove the disc from the system unless it's in use as you don't need HEN for this. They aren't sure why this happens but they have been debugging it as it was thought to have been fixed since the 1.03+ builds. Small price to play to avoid dreaded black screens.

Removing the disc is recommended by this guide. I don't know if that ever definitively got fixed, but I get very very few freezes/black screens/init failures and I never keep a disc in the drive. That's pretty anecdotal evidence on my part. Could be anything, but my freeze/black screen/init failure luck while following this guide is extremely good. I recommend following as much of it as possible.

the freezes caused by disc in drive should have been fixed in 3.0.0. it is recommended to start HEN when the ps3 is first turned on.

Ok there are a few things that if you have issues using these tips will solve all your issues.

First off if using webMAN mod try setting your temp to a constant temp instead of having the PS3 auto setting for the fan control. It's fixed quiet a few issues for some people.

Also if still giving you issues and want webMAN @deank vanilla version doesn't conflict with other managers. I personally have IRISMAN, multiMAN, and Managunz installed with webMAN mod issues free. I get maybe one fail out of 50+. BTW I use all three of @Joonie @Zar and @kozarovv HEN builds of all three managers. As well as @aldostools wMM/IRISMAN file manager

Another issue some have especially when installing HEN exploit the first time is the need to enable the browser close option.

Also if you can't trigger the exploit try deleting the cache/cookies and only have one window open at a time due to the RAM restrictions/limitations.

Now if you were having issues with HEN it's a good idea to simply erase with a file manager or via FTP. The HEN folder is found in the following directory.

HDD0/:hen

Then you can start fresh to ensure you don't have any file corruption going on due to HEN failing to init. It is also wise to boot i into recovery menu and restore your file system. After that rebuild your database. Nothing is deleted but you will have to reorganize your XMB. You do this using #3 first and then option #4. It also couldn't hurt to reinstall HFW TWICE from this screen using option #6 with the file in a folder like this and named exactly.

Also if you are using XMB mods it's wise to remove them first and foremost to self troubleshoot. These can be the culprit of some issues as well.

Now most if not all of these tips are on the forum but I tried to put them all in one post and tag it PS3HEN so others can find it easily. Doing these things either one or a combo of a few has fixed 98% of all the users I have helped remedy their issues.

And another thing do not try to install CCAPI as it will throw a soft brick that's annoying to fix. Also don't use Rebug Toolbox if you don't know what you are doing. It wasn't designed for HEN. And XMBM+ and other XML mods weren't designed for HEN. They will throw a soft brick as well. @DeViL303 HEN Toolbox is ok as it was done with HEN in mind but it if a problem should occur see if removing it can help.

Finally I'll leave with the order of which I would do to ensure you have the best possible setup and no file corruption.

  1. Delete HEN from "HDD0:/hen
  2. Install HFW twice from recovery
  3. Run "File System Repair" from recovery
  4. Run "Rebuild Database" from recovery
  5. Open your browser and clear cookies & cache
  6. Press triangle and make sure you enable browser auto close option
  7. Run auto installer for HEN from **ps3xploit.com >Domain no Longer owned by team** (ps3xploit.me =new)
  8. Do a fresh install of the managers again. They can be found HERE while webMAN can be found HERE

Hopefully this helps some of the newer users out there. If you have anything to add that helped you please let me know and I can add your fix and credit to this like I did via mentions from others who have helped.

Let's keep the conversation civil as well. No flamming or bad mouthing other new users. I know this has all been said before but now it's all in one post. As usual feel free to drop me a message and I can help more. But most of all the guys are working on this non-stop since it's initial release.

Their goal is to not get black screens or HEN init issues. Remember they do this for all of us for free. So keep your H"version X.X.X is the best version" to yourself. That is great but without some concrete proof and just your opinion is just that your opinion. It's always a good idea to use the most up to date public builds.
Hi, first thank for this tips its really helpful but couple of things i have problems with first i didn't find HEN folder in HDD0 and repair system files stock in 44% and same thin for rebuilt database any advice for it
NOTE: i have latest HFW 4.88

hi, i follow this tutorial and i have same problem, any app I launched it show black screen, except webman. I have firmware 4.89

Same exact behavior for me. Through some unknown procedure I have gotten multiman to work, but after a task such as copying a game to the HDD all the "press [] to exit" keys are unmapped, and I have to do a hard reset - which then makes the black screen issue come back. I think completely removing multiman and webman, then reinstalling might sometimes get multiman to work again. HEN seems to work perfectly, so I don't see any reason to reinstall it.

Seems to me that stuff plugged into the USB system seems to often stop HEN initialising. Yesterday HEN was just sitting spinning, and as soon as I unplugged a second controller that was plugged in and charging, HEN immediately finished initialising properly. I have also see it fail to initialise when I had a large 1TB disk drive attached to the USB.

yeah there are some issues with recent versions. if using remote control to enable hen, it will not finish until you press a button again (any button AFAIK).

Seems like the pad detection is still causing some issues for some people, i tried a thousand of times with my ds3 controller connected and no issues, but for some it causes problems.

@esc0rtd3w are you around? I'm trying to add some delay in loading plugins, but it doesn't seem to work, i'm trying to see if i get less freezes due to webman and other plugins loading upon the HEN activation

Hmm so the dynamic fan control causes:
If you have dynamic fan control selected in /setup.ps3, the PS3 will get a black screen when a game is launched. This occurs because there is an increase in temperature that triggers a change in the fan speed. This change is detected by the hypervisor (LV1) and causes a kernel panic. The solution is change the fan mode to SYSCON or manual (e.g. 35%).
Additionally FPS counter also may cause issues:
https://github.com/aldostools/webMAN-MOD/issues?q=is:issue state:open fps counter.

Has something changed for HEN 3.4.0 since these tips are from 2019?

I dont think so. I personally never really had issues with dynamic fan, but others have. The fps thing I never tried.

I had a black screen + a console refuses to turn off especially when I wanted to launch a homebrew app one after another.
E.g. GamePad Test -> Movian...
These problems disappeared when I changed a fan control from auto to manual.
At least I had these problems on CECH-3004B.
When I used auto fan control + FPS counter sometimes I even cannot launch any app...

Salut @esc0rtd3w :

Comment fais-tu pour n'avoir aucun souci avec la ventilation dynamique de ta PS3, c'est une compatible CFW ou tu as aussi une non compatible qui est sous le HEN et que la ventilation est Dynamique ? Je rêve ...
How do you manage to have no problems with the dynamic ventilation of your PS3, is it CFW compatible or do you also have a non-compatible one that is under the HEN and the ventilation is Dynamic? I'm dreaming...

I test "lightly" compared to actual gamers probably :)

Lately, I have also tested without wmm for the most part, so my results are mainly from earlier testing, I suppose.

According to my personal long-term experience, when using dynamic fans (WMM), if you start homebrew, there is a high probability that the screen will appear black, if you start original game, the screen will not be black, so I suspect the problem is caused by a self-signed eboot (some incompatible with HEN?), but this is just my personal guess
Also, there was no problem with the earlier versions (probably before version 2.1)
