Following the 4.83 Official Firmware update for the PS3, not only did it close the PS3Xploit's for installing CFW on 4.82 and also the HAN Exploit, but it also means its time for a round of Custom Firmware updates for excising CFW user's. So if your first experience on CFW was on 4.82 on your on 4.82 CFW, then all you do is update to a 4.83 CFW of your choice and install the pup the same way you would an official update from a USB STORAGE DEVICE, but of course with the CFW PUP. This release of 4.83 FERROX COBRA CFW from developer @Alexander is a Cobra CFW, so it has all the features of a Standard CFW, plus contains the special Cobra payload which provides background running plugin support, PS3/PS2/PS1/PSP ISO Support some of the features this payload provides, (note standard CFW can install MAMBA and replicate many COBRA features) All details of this release can be found in the Translated notes found below from developer Alexander.

    Finally here is your CFW!

It is the first Custom Firmware of the 'most famous' ones. Do not trust too much of the unknown CFW that you find around the web, because they may have been built with the MFW tool, which certainly is not the best way to do a CFW.

The CFW FERROX now you know it very well and you also know its developer, our friend @ Alexander Already many have been waiting for it for days, but as you know we need time to test all the features of the Firmware. We have been able to test everything well, but it is always possible that something is missing. For this, if you find any problems do not hesitate to let us know!

    Let's get back to us..

Looks nice! Just one question, is it safe to upgrade from the latest Rebug 4.82.2? And I have still an FAT console with System on NAND, but without bd reader anymore, just the logic-board is still there.

yes it is,you just need noBD version of cfw.if you like to change and test out cfw's i suggest to qa toggle your console, that way you can go up and down to whatever cfw you like.

i think you do,i have broken bd,and whole unit is still connected and if not on noBD cfw anything i launch it'll go to black screen.i think only if laser is shot but unit works then you don't need noBD cfw.

I've been there too, but in my case I'm pretty sure the logic board was defective.
Anyway, if he is on a regular debug (non-noBD) now, any cfw should work fine without the noBD patches :)

Seems logical to me, I mean the 4.82.2 Rebug I have on on my PS3 is the normal offical one without any BD-Patches and games launch fine with just the logic board connected and bd-drive built out. Thanks for the Infos mates. :)

So some info: Just Updated from 4.82.2 Rebug Rex and it worked flawlessly, all my games are running and I have just the logic board connected without bd-drive.

Yep, thats enought :)
Btw, some details incase you are interested
For the ribbon cables you can try to remove some, i dont know how many had your bluray drive, but if you are using several try to remove the smallests ones and try again (after doing it, if you can boot apps/games it means everything is working fine)

And you should "isolate" the daughterboard to avoid any posible shorcuts
Ive seen people doing this just by inserting the board inside an envelope :D
An envelope is not the best material to electrical isolation though, for this task the plastic is much better, so if you find some kind of "plastic envelope" of the size of the board it could be perfect
Or cut some plastic sheets + tape, to cover he whole board with tape

Btw. I wonder why Multiman says System version 4.75, while the main system says correctly 4.83.

that's normal. wmm does the same thing. I'm not sure about an update with mm, but there's an updated version of the wmm updater. it may say the wrong firmware number, but it shouldn't affect anything.

Okay then, thanks for the info.

That would be because the 4.83 kernel is basically the same as 4.75. multiman detects it as such & needs to compare a few bytes of memory specific to each fw version to identify the exact version but the app is not updated to look for 4.83, it does not detect 4.81 or 4.82 as the few bytes do not match so it goes with the default 4.75 kernel version.

Just one question left, how high is the risk of getting banned nowadays on the PS3 with CFW? I just ask if it's somehow possible. (I don't play games online, I just would like to use the PSN Store and sync my trophies and I never made an PSN Account yet) And I never mod anything, I just mount games and play offline.

I think the risk is the same. I mean I got banned, and I don't even sign in.

I'm on 4.82 OFW and want to jailbreak and install a 4.83 CFW. Ferrox/Cobra seems like it'll do the trick. But why does it need to already have a CFW installed before installing this CFW? Just wondering.

The installed firmware does some security checks to the firmware you are trying to install
All the official firmware installers (the file PS3UPDAT.PUP) passes that checks, but none of the custom firmwares passes them

What the custom firmware does (when installed) is to bypass that checks of the firmware you are trying to install

This is where I'm confused. If none of the custom firmwares pass the check, then how can any of them be installed when doing the initial changeover to CFW? Does the PS3xploit have any role in this?

The initial changeover is done by patching the Flash memory to replace the CoreOS files that contain the checks.
The patching can be done via hardware flasher or software flasher, it makes no différence.
Once the NOR/NAND is properly patched, modified pup files can be installed.

Got it. Thank you!
